Spoonfeeding learners must stop, says ex-Head of Barclays University Business School and Kineo
- BRIGHTON, UK, June 08, 2006 - Rogers was part of the team at Barclays who designed, delivered and helped to sustain one of the most successful online learning communities in the UK. In a recent audio conversation with Stephen Walsh of Kineo, the leading learning consultancy, he explained that one of the reasons this and other learning communities can be successful is the transfer of responsibility to the learner as individual, and away from the model of waiting for the answer from the training department.
He commented: "We should be trying to move to a situations where we have a relationship with a learner on a one to one basis, rather than wait for everyone"s needs to be aggregated and assuming that a formal programme two month"s hence will provide the answer, as by then, the issue may well have moved on...Learners should take responsibility for figuring out what they need."
In the interview, available in full on the Kineo website, Rogers predicts a movement towards the disintermediation of learning, whereby the formal structures and delivery channels become less important as learners find, and in some cases build what they need on their own terms, with support from learning and development teams. This more informal model, though admittedly "more difficult to manage", will ultimately prove more sustainable.
