Raw Story: Hunter S. Thompson Mystery Revealed

- August 15, 2005 - When outlaw journalist and fierce US administration critic Hunter S. Thompson ended his life this past February, he left behind an uncharacteristically cryptic and mysterious note: the single word "Counselor" typed in the middle of a blank page of stationary from the 4th Amendment Foundation. For fellow-journalists and fans of such influential works as Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, it has been but one more unanswered question surrounding the life and death of the legendary Thompson.

But in Saturday"s editorial at RawStory.com, news nexus for the knowing, expatriate writer D.A. Blyler has solved the riddle, laying out a logical argument that"s likely to become the accepted story. Citing the tremendous impact the Bible had on Thompson"s work throughout his career (the "gonzo" writer quoted liberally from both the Old and New Testaments) Blyler reveals the meaning of Thompson"s last word -- Counselor.

Interviewed at his home in rural Thailand, Blyler was asked why he thought no one had, to this point, made the biblical connection:

"It"s not as though Thompson"s Hollywood pals like Johnny Depp chill out with the Bible between takes. And, as for journalists, the serious ones are too busy battling administration-fed dyspepsia and defending themselves from rabid media jackals like Bill O"Reilly. Thompson wasn"t the only journalist painfully disillusioned by the current state of affairs. Don"t forget that Helen Thomas has threatened to kill herself if, God forbid, Dick Cheney runs for president in 2008."

Blyler, widely published in alternative and international publications, was recognized last year for his withering, and often hilarious, commentaries on George W. Bush and his administration. Published at RawStory.com in the run-up to the 2004 presidential elections his weekly columns became a must read among young progressive readers.
