There couldn"t be a better time for the ninth annual Green Building Expo.
- SCOTTSDALE, AZ, September 01, 2006 - With the Phoenix area recently scorched by the hottest June on record, skyrocketing gas prices forcing drivers to rethink energy consumption, and former Vice President Al Gore"s global warming movie warning of worse to come, the Green Building Expo offers the opportunity to make a difference.
"The Green Building Expo is an opportunity to learn how we can protect our health and reduce our environmental footprint in the way we build, remodel, and operate our buildings in the Sonoran Desert," says Anthony Floyd, Scottsdale Green Building Manager.
"We spend 80-90% of our time indoors where indoor air pollutants can be five times higher than outdoors," says Floyd. "We need to become more aware of the building decisions that affect the quality of our health. We all want safe, healthy and comfortable places to live, work and play."
The event includes 50-60 exhibits, an all-day lineup of expert speakers, workshops, demos, author book signings, delicious food, kids" activities, fuel-efficient vehicles such as the Smart Car and the Zebra, and the new Cinema Verde film festival.
Cinema Verde will run short films on green building and healthy living themes from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, and each film will be followed by discussion.
"These films are fantastically entertaining and enlightening," says James McCay, one of the film festival organizers. "In one, a normal guy takes his rental apartment and eliminates all use of fossil fuel energy. It"s entertainment that leaves you feeling empowered."
Exhibitor booths feature cutting-edge building techniques, indoor products such as nontoxic paints and recycled flooring materials, energy efficient windows, and non-polluting insulation for making walls and attics more energy-efficient, to name just a few.
Visitors will meet professionals and homeowners who have implemented rainwater harvesting systems, grey water irrigation systems, solar power, edible landscapes and green remodeling.
World-renowned architect, Randall Stout, is the Friday keynote speaker, appearing at noon. He will be speaking from his book "Environmental Alchemy," and will be available for book signing after his presentation.
Paula LaPorte, architect and Robert LaPorte, builder, will be the keynote speakers at noon on Saturday in the main auditorium. Owners of EcoNest, the LaPortes are based in Santa Fe, New Mexico and are nationally known speakers on the role of architecture in designing energy efficient homes. They will also be available for book signing on Friday and Saturday.
