Dee Flagg artwork auction on eBay
/24-7PressRelease.com/ - Gainesville, CA, May 5, 2005 - Here is your chance to own a Dee Flagg original. A 1969 Dee Flagg carving of Davy Crockett will be auctioned off on eBay starting June 1, 2005.
Flagg was best known for his carvings of the Old West and Pioneer era. Flagg"s work seldom appears on the open market, although a few have sold through live auctions. No reproductions of his works have ever been permitted by the artist or his estate.
Dee Flagg died in 1999 and he was much publicized for his excellent work. Flagg works are all original, only a few were bronzed; all are copyright protected by the Flagg family. As a result, there are a limited number of carvings. His work has always held significant collector value.
In August 2003, a late-breaking-news event erupted involving an old bus, which was auctioned off for the then-due $75 storage charges. In it was discovered a treasure trove of Flagg"s works along with those of his family, evaluated by the buyer at over a million dollars. Sadly, Dee"s ailing sister Gene neglected to pay storage and the bus was auctioned off to the highest bidder. A legal battle ensues over this incident.
His works grace the walls and shelves of museums, civic buildings, banks, churches and private collections the world over. Prominent collectors of Dee Flagg"s work included the renowned William S. Hart (California Museum), Autry (museum), Rogers (museum), Russell Knott of Knott"s Berry Farm (museum) in Anaheim, Stoneham and J. Edgar Hoover, among others.
The signed carving of Davy Crockett is of a lightweight wood and stands 18.5" high with a separate signed base that is 9" long. The artwork is signed and dated by the artist on the back of Davy Crockett under his right arm/shoulder. The base is also signed and dated. Decked in full western outfit, fringe and raccoon hat included, Davy Crockett stands ready with his rifle and powder horn at his side. Though the artwork has been loved and cherished in a private home since purchased, there is a less than 1/8th of an inch small nick at the back of the statue on the fringe, but can not be seen from the front and does not take away from the overall beauty that is this masterpiece.
