Regional Workshops Slated For 4-H Shooting Sports Volunteers

- LUBBOCK, TX, December 03, 2005 - Texas Cooperative Extension will offer two regional workshops for current and newly recruited 4-H shooting sports leaders and coaches in West Texas in 2006.
The first is slated Jan. 6-8 at the Texas AandM University System Agricultural Research and Extension Center at Amarillo, at 6500 west Amarillo Blvd. The second is set for April 28-30 at the Texas AandM University System Agricultural Research and Extension Center at Lubbock, one-half mile east of Interstate Highway 27 on FM 1294.
The workshops will cover archery, pistol, rifle, reloading, shotgun, black powder shooting and instruction specifically geared for coordinating a local shooting sports club or program. Instructors will cover teaching and coaching techniques, the fundamentals of safety and firearms nomenclature, and strategies for success in youth program leadership.
In addition to these general session topics, participants can choose one extra study course in archery, program coordination, pistol, rifle or shotgun, said Brad Davis, Extension 4-H youth specialist based at Lubbock.
"We will also offer hand loading and reloading classes if there is sufficient interest," he said. "Reloading classes will require a minimum of four participants, but we would prefer at least 10. The workshops feature hands-on instruction in all sessions. They are dedicated to teaching marksmanship in each shooting sports discipline."
Volunteers who complete the training also qualify for National Rifle Association certification in the discipline they study. Those who complete the archery training can qualify for National Archery Development Association instructor certification, Davis said.
"All volunteers who attend are trained by certified state instructors," he said. "Volunteers who complete this training and demonstrate experience with a local club can qualify to serve as state and national 4-H shooting sports instructors and coordinators."
The registration deadline for is Dec. 9 for the Amarillo workshop, and March 31 for the Lubbock event. Registration forms and information is available at county Extension offices, the Texas 4-H Shooting Sports web site: http://tx4-h.tamu.edu/ss/ , or by calling Davis at (806) 746-6101.
"These workshops are an opportunity for volunteers to get started with the 4-H shooting sports program, which emphasizes shooting, hunting and marksmanship skills," Davis said. "4-H"ers in shooting sports can compete in county, regional, state and national competitions. Some advance to Olympic competition."
Local 4-H shooting sports clubs are open to all youths at least eight years old and in the third grade, up to age 18. 4-H teaches shooting sports to more than 300,000 youngsters nationwide each year. Volunteer leaders help county Extension agents coordinate local 4-H clubs. Volunteers who are interested in shooting sports can become involved in existing county clubs, or work with Extension agents to help establish a shooting sports club.
