Martin Truex Jr. Highlights Special Four Hour Weekend Thunder NASCAR Pre-Race Show on Boston"s 1510 AM The Zone
- BOSTON, MA, June 25, 2006 - This Sunday, June 25, Boston"s only NASCAR pre-race radio show, 1510 AM The Zone"s Weekend Thunder, will broadcast a special four hour program starting at 11 A.M. and will count all the way down to the start of the Dodge/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. Joining the extended program this week will be current Raybestos Rookie of the Year candidate in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series—Martin Truex Jr.
Truex Jr., a native of Mayetta, N.J., is no stranger to racing in the northeast. The son of former NASCAR Busch North Series competitor Martin Truex, Truex Jr. began racing go-karts at the age of 11 in 1991, and after a successful career at New Egypt Speedway in New Jersey, moved into the Modified division at Wall Township Speedway in the same state in 1998. In 2000 he started to compete regularly on what was then known as the NASCAR Busch North (now Busch East) Series, and collected several wins in that division during the early 2000s. Truex Jr. then made the move south to Dale Earnhardt Incorporated and Chance 2 Motorsports where he won back to back Busch Series championships in 2004 and 2005.
This season he is driving for DEI in the Nextel Cup Series, and currently sits 24th in overall series points. The road course at Infineon no doubt will be a challenge for Truex Jr., but the 26-year-old has proven he can get it done turning right and left, with one of his 13 Busch series victories having come on the road course at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City in March 2005.
"It"s nice to see another of our northern drivers find some success in NASCAR"s top levels, as it will create even more rooting interest in our area," said Weekend Thunder host Bob MacKinnon. "We"ll talk to Martin about his memories of competing up north, and how he"s made the transition from local short track racing to the sport"s big time."
Sunday"s edition of Weekend Thunder will also include a look at the New England short track scene, including a focus on the American Canadian Tour"s upcoming trip north of the border to Canada"s Sanair Superspeedway for the Mega Classique, the first leg of the 2006 $10,000 to win ACTion Super Series.
Weekend Thunder is Boston"s only local NASCAR show on the region"s only NASCAR station— WWZN 1510 AM The Zone. Each Sunday at 11 AM hosts Bob MacKinnon, Greg "Dr. Spooky" Lucas, and April Barker talk racing, take listener calls, conduct an on-air race picking contest, and occasionally welcome guests from the racing world. Troy Germain, meanwhile, hosts the Weekend Thunder post race show following The Zone"s coverage of each NASCAR Nextel Cup event.
