- BOSTON, MA, November 23, 2006 — This Sunday Weekend Thunder, Boston"s only NASCAR radio show on the region"s only NASCAR station—1510 AM The Zone, will wrap up the 2006 season with a full slate of guests and events. Television personalities Rusty Wallace, Allen Bestwick, Jamie Little, and Shannon Spake will visit with the Thunder crew, as will Speedway Illustrated technical editor Karl Fredrickson. Meanwhile, Jim Lafford of Londonderry Raceway will be in studio to present the 2006 Thunder Cup, and the production crew from Fox Sports Net New England"s new Pit Stop Talk television show will be on hand to film all of the day"s events for inclusion in an upcoming episode. The chock-full three hour program kicks off at 11 a.m.
"We"ve got a lot of excitement lined up for the final show of the season," said Weekend Thunder host Bob MacKinnon. "We think this will be a great way to thank our listeners for their support throughout the year, and will give them a glimpse of what they can expect for 2007."
One of the most colorful and popular Nextel Cup drivers in recent memory, Rusty Wallace will chat with Team Thunder about ESPN/ABC"s renewed motorsports coverage and his transition from the cockpit to the microphone. The 1989 Cup champion won 55 races in his illustrious career before his retirement in 2005. Currently he serves as a car owner in the NASCAR Busch Series, and this season provided color commentary for Indy Racing League broadcasts, while appearing regularly on SportsCenter. Next year he will return as an integral part of ESPN/ABC"s NASCAR broadcast lineup.
Also joining Weekend Thunder will be Coventry, R.I., native Allen Bestwick. Bestwick served as an announcer on MRN Radio for over a decade before joining NBC/TNT in 1999. There he has spent time both as the lead play by play announcer and lead pit reporter, and next season will continue his pit reporting duties for ESPN/ABC. Meanwhile, accomplished reporter, television host, model, and actress Jamie Little will make an appearance on the program as well. Little has covered a variety of extreme sports and motorsports in her career, ranging from dirt bikes to Indy Cars. Next season she will serve as a pit reporter for all the Nextel Cup and Busch Series races across the NASCAR family of networks. Finally, veteran TV reporter Shannon Spake, formerly of Speed TV"s NASCAR Nation, will round out the trio of television personalities to appear on the program. Spake will be a part of ESPN/ABC"s pre-race programming beginning next year.
On the written word side, Speedway Illustrated technical editor and True Value Modified Racing Series driver Karl Fredrickson of Fremont, N.H., will once again join Weekend Thunder to discuss the conclusion of the 2006 short track season, and preview what"s in store in the local scene for 2007.
The 2006 Weekend Thunder on-line fantasy racing champion will be crowned on Sunday as well, and on hand to present the Thunder Cup will be Londonderry Raceway owner Jim Lafford. Londonderry has been an essential part of Weekend Thunder this season, having sponsored the Need For Speed on-air race picking contest each week and provided thousands of dollars worth of prizes.
Furthermore, for the first time ever all of the excitement of a Weekend Thunder show will be put to video, as the crew from Pit Stop Talk will collect footage for their new motorsports show which will air episodes on FSN New England beginning in January. The program covers a variety of New England tracks, drivers, and other local racing, giving New England motorsports fans a television destination to stay up to date with what"s going on in their area.
As always, the Thunder crew will take listener calls (with a few lucky listeners in line to win race tickets from the Pit Stop Talk crew), wrap up the 2006 racing season, and of course, like any Weekend Thunder program the day is sure to include at least a few surprises.
Weekend Thunder is Boston "s only local NASCAR show on the region"s only NASCAR station— WWZN 1510 AM The Zone. Each Sunday at 11 a.m. hosts Bob MacKinnon, Greg "Dr. Spooky" Lucas, and April Barker talk racing, take listener calls, and conduct an on-air race picking contest. They occasionally welcome guests from the racing world, and broadcast from live remotes several times a season. Troy Germain, meanwhile, hosts the Weekend Thunder post race show following The Zone"s coverage of each NASCAR Nextel Cup event.
