Across the world, experts are working at full tilt: The aim is for fuel cell systems to quickly provide a clean energy supply alternative for mobile, portable, and stationary applications. On September 29 and 30, the eighth fuel cell forum "f-cell" in Stuttgart will include 60 lectures and a great many insights into important international flagship projects and initiatives. The detailed program will be available from end of June onwards on the Internet (www.f-cell.de).
Stuttgart (eos) – Many industrial nations are counting on hydrogen and fuel cells in future for a clean energy supply that is intended to protect the climate and reduce dependency on increasingly expensive fossil energy carriers. This is clearly illustrated by the eighth international fuel cell specialist forum "f-cell", which will take place on September 29 and 30, 2008, in Stuttgart. Speakers from leading fuel cell countries – from the USA and Canada as well as from Japan and Korea – will be traveling to the event organized by the Wirtschaftsförderung Region Stuttgart GmbH (WRS - economic promotion) and the Peter Sauber Agentur Messen und Kongresse GmbH. The Baden-Württemberg utility company EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG is this year's main sponsor of the forum, which combines a congress and trade fair. The Ministry for the Environment in Baden-Württemberg also cooperates with "f-cell". The program includes 60 lectures in ten forums, parallel in some cases, regarding stationary, mobile, and portable applications, the infrastructure, news from the field of science, as well as market opportunities and marketing strategies. Many of these will provide exciting insight into fuel cell projects and progress in other countries.
Reports on US activities
For example, John Van Zee, Professor at the University of South Carolina, will provide an overview of the status of hydrogen and fuel cell activities in the USA. Byron McCormick, General Motors Vice President for Fuel Cell Activities, will specifically discuss the expansion of the filling station infrastructure for fuel cell vehicles. He will also examine the market opportunities for fuel cells in comparison with electric drives. Allison Fisher of the cell phone manufacturer Motorola will talk about direct-methanol fuel cells as an energy supply alternative for portable devices.
Innovative projects in Canada
Chris Sacré, President of the Sacré Davey Group, will be coming from Canada. He will talk about the exemplary "Integrated Waste Hydrogen Utilization Project" (IWHUP), which uses waste hydrogen to operate filling stations and a car wash, as well as the possibilities for a comprehensive hydrogen economy. John Tak, President and CEO of the industrial group Hydrogen & Fuel Cells Canada, will present the planned, fully integrated fuel cell bus fleet of the B.C. Transit transportation company, which consists of a total of 20 vehicles.
Progress in Korea and Japan
Chung Soo Kim of the Fuel Cell Research Center at the Korea Institute of Energy Research will report on the research and development activities in her country. The lecture to be given by Hiroshia Aki of the Japanese National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology will cover a specific demonstration project involving the stationary application of fuel cells in household energy supply in Japan.
Cooperation in Europe
On a European level, the Joint Technology Initiative (JTI for short) is intended to coordinate and drive forward future activities. The JTI is a joint venture of the European Commission and an association of European industrial companies. André Martin of NuCellSys from Kirchheim/Teck, Baden-Württemberg, is responsible for the structure of the association and will present the JTI and its planned future. Dr. Klaus Bonhoff will talk about the German national innovation program for hydrogen and fuel cell technology (NIP). He is CEO of the National Organization for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology, which is to implement the program.
Marketing strategies for fuel cell systems
In 2007, those responsible for "f-cell" introduced a new topic forum: Marketing strategies for fuel cell systems. Among others, the following speakers will be involved: Susan Sheehan, specialist for "green" marketing and director of customer service and sustainability at the US marketing service provider Motum B2B. She will present strategies for the market launch of fuel cells. Manfred Stefener, founder and member of the supervisory board of Smart Fuel Cell AG, which develops, produces, and markets miniaturized direct-methanol fuel cell systems up to one kilowatt, will describe the central factors for successful market entry.
